Build environment

This page lists the tools and versions on our Android and iOS build servers. We update it whenever a build image changes. For what changed and when, see the changelog.

Android

The current Android build image became the default on 14 October 2026. It is built on Ubuntu 26.04. Node.js tracks the latest 24.x release; every other version below is pinned.

Tool Version
Operating system Ubuntu 26.04
Node.js 24.x
npm 12.2.0
Cordova CLI 13.0.0
cordova-res 0.15.4
Java (JDK) 8, 11, 17 and 21. See which Java your build uses.
Gradle 8.14.5 installed. 6.5, 7.1.1, 7.4.2, 7.6, 8.7, 8.13, 8.14.2 and 8.14.3 are also pre-cached.
Kotlin 2.4.20
Android build-tools 30.0.3, 32.0.0, 33.0.3, 34.0.0, 35.0.0, 35.0.1, 36.0.0, 36.1.0
Android platforms android-29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 36.1
SDK command-line tools build 15859902
git Installed, so plugins referenced by a git URL can be fetched

The Gradle versions are the ones each supported cordova-android release and Capacitor ask for through the Gradle wrapper. Having them cached means your build doesn’t download Gradle first.

Cordova Android versions

Set the version with an <engine name="android" spec="..." /> tag in config.xml. If there’s no engine tag, Cordova installs the latest cordova-android from npm.

cordova-android Java (JDK) build-tools Platform
15.x 17 36.1.0 android-36.1
14.x 17 35.0.1 android-35
13.x 17 34.0.0 android-34
12.x 17 33.0.3 android-33
11.x 17 32.0.0 android-32
10.x 11 30.0.3 android-30
9.1.1 8 36.1.0 android-29

These versions are pre-cached, so builds that use them start faster: 10.0.0, 10.0.1, 10.1.0, 10.1.1, 10.1.2, 11.0.0, 12.0.0, 12.0.1, 13.0.0, 14.0.0, 14.0.1, 15.0.0 and 15.1.0.

cordova-android 9 is only available through our fork, with spec="https://github.com/voltbuilder/cordova-android#9.1.1". Any other engine below 10.0.0 is rejected. If you’re still on 9, we recommend updating.

Which Java your build uses

  • Cordova: cordova-android 9.1.1 uses Java 8, 10.x uses Java 11, and 11 and later use Java 17.
  • Capacitor: Capacitor 7 and later use Java 21. Earlier versions use Java 17. To choose explicitly, set capacitor.jvm_21 in voltbuilder.json. See Choosing the Java version.

iOS

Tool Version
Operating system macOS 15.7.4
Xcode 26.2
Node.js 24.21.0
npm 12.2
Cordova CLI 13
CocoaPods 1.17
cordova-ios 6.0.0 through 8.1.1 are pre-cached: 6.0.0, 6.1.0, 6.1.1, 6.2.0, 6.3.0, 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.1.0, 7.1.1, 8.0.0, 8.0.1, 8.1.0, 8.1.1

Work continues on an iOS build image with Xcode 26.6 on macOS 26.7.1. This page will change when it becomes the default.

npm and plugin installs

npm 12 tightened its defaults around git dependencies and install scripts. Both the Android and iOS build servers keep the earlier npm 11 behaviour, so plugins that install from a git URL or run an install script work as they did before.

Beta build servers

When we’re testing a new build image, it runs on separate beta servers. To use them, email support@volt.build and ask for beta access, then check Build using beta servers? on the upload page. Betas are announced in the VoltBuilder Announcements forum category. The versions on this page are for the default servers.
